          Day Service

          Training and Education

We have our very own tutor qualified to deliver City and Guilds and OCN courses. 73 people signed up for Literacy, Numeracy or Assertiveness and Decision Making in 2010, 35 of these received qualifications!!!  17 of these were resident in the emergency accommodation unit.

When we bought No 11 and No 13 Queen Street, we bought a huge back garden that was in a bit of a state. The Day Service staff, volunteers and clients cleared and structured the garden into what it is now - see photo of garden as it is now further down this page.  The Future Jobs Fund allowed us to employ a gardener who went on to train to deliver workshops to the clients, he has gained a Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector or PTLLS.  He was able to maintain and teach FJF employees gardening skills.

More people are accessing the numerous activities we have on offer, see 'events' under 'more' on the bar above.

This workshop encompasses Citizenship, Social Responsibility, Anger Management and dealing with difficult situations. The course runs for 8 weeks and everyone attending and participating is presented with a certificate of completion. The feedback we have had from individuals attending has been really positive; for those that are not quite as comfortable with group work, we are able to work on a one to one basis. Claire Robinson compiled and delivers the Employment Support Work Shop. This covers all areas of learning confidence and other skills needed to gain employment;  the course also covers work preparation - with everything from body language to telephone skills, mock interviews, CV writing.  Made to be enjoyable but educational. Wendy Bowness has developed Anger Management course which is delivered as a group session but can be one to one, as we find that some people do not want to discuss this subject as a group. Lisa Masapinto delivers the Harm Reduction course, which covers sexual health, physical health (including healthy eating), alcohol awareness, drug awareness, and basic mental health.  We also hold and ICT Numeracy and Literacy accredited course facilitated by an external tutor - Anniko Noble.  We have a lovely new computer suite and for the people who access the Skills for Life, the new equipment will enable them when it comes to typing their CV!!!

There has also been a noticeable increase in other agencies holding Drop-In sessions at our premises, these include Direct Access (drug treatment service) and the Alcohol Team —they provide a friendly, laid back discussion group for people accessing the service but who are not at the stage at which they are ready to change.
We have also built some outstanding relationships with partner agencies who use the premises to interview people, these include New Roots, Notts Community Housing, NACRO, RAP (Resettlement & Aftercare Provision– for young offenders), Children & Young Peoples Services, Sherwood Project, Double Impact, Dangerous Persons Monitoring Unit, Turning Point and Adult Social Care services,  to name a few. This not only benefits people accessing the service but also broadens the knowledge of the staff, as it allows them to network with other professionals. We also have Bassetlaw’s Dual Diagnosis Nurse.

The opening of HOPE Emergency Accommodation in November 2006 has generated an increase of people actually engaging with the Day Service and the outcomes have been fantastic with more people being Resettled into appropriate accommodation, an increase in individuals accessing drug and alcohol services. More and more people have noticed the changes within our organisation and for those that in the past have simply dropped into HOPE and not engaged, it has opened their eyes to what is available, the quality of work being done with people is of a high standard and we are able to spend more time with individuals than ever before.

Through trial and error we have come to where we are now, at times it has been frustrating and extremely difficult but we are now at the stage where things are coming together through client involvement, people now have a higher sense of respect for the service. The people accessing HOPE Day Service have more choice than ever before and are being given more structure in their lives to help them tackle their own problems.
HOPE are progressing with a number of clients the possibility of getting a job and we are doing this by encouraging long term unemployed people to learn the basics of employability by undertaking our newest initiative the ‘Step to Work’ programme.  This programme prepares people for the realities of working - getting up in a morning, being accountable for a piece of work, being a team member, earning a living!
